I recently put out a family model call with priority for families who face financial barriers. Quickly after posting to a few facebook groups, I found my inbox flooded with stories. It wasn’t until I started reading that I realized how difficult it was going to be to choose just four families. After only two days I had to close the applications for requests in order to not emotionally overwhelm myself. Folks who applied were so generous with their stories and their experiences. They were so appreciative of me even prioritizing low-income folks.
I know photography can be inaccessible. I know it feels like a lot to pay a photographer. I hope that those who have the ability to pay me for my services understand that by hiring me they create the opportunity for me to offer these services to folks who would otherwise not have access. Doing this model call was a great reminder of why I provide low-income pricing as well as a reminder to continue my hustle in order to book those who can afford full pricing. I am still finding a balance for myself to continue to do this work for all!
I was so blown away by the beautiful families who showed up on a spring morning with the unpredictable Vancouver weather (we were briefly hailed on)! I loved spending time with each of them, seeing how they all interacted with care and love. It can be really hard to get kids to participate willingly in a photography session and it was really lovely to have parents who weren’t seeking the perfectly-posed family picture, but instead capturing the moment, whether it was playful, or stressful, or a little of both!
Thank you to everyone who participated!
